Are U-Turns Legal at Intersections in Calgary?

This is one of the most common questions drivers ask. The answer depends on the type of intersection you’re approaching.

Intersections with Traffic Lights

In Alberta, U-turns are illegal at intersections controlled by traffic lights unless permitted by signage. Having a green light does not automatically make a U-turn legal. This covers the vast majority of busy intersections throughout the city of Calgary.

This means:

• A green light does not equal permission to make a U-turn
• A green left-turn arrow authorizes a left turn into the appropriate lane, not a U-turn
• A flashing advance green does not change this rule

Some specific Calgary locations do have signage or signals that allow U-turns. For example, certain spots along 17 Avenue SE (International Avenue) feature dedicated U-turn lights or posted signs permitting the maneuver at median breaks. If you see these, and conditions are safe, a U-turn is permitted at that location.

From an enforcement standpoint, police in Calgary routinely ticket drivers who pull a U-turn at busy signalized intersections, especially when the move surprises other drivers or disrupts the normal flow of traffic. If you’re unsure, assume the U-turn is not allowed.

Intersections with Stop Signs

At intersections controlled by stop signs (and no traffic lights), a U-turn may be allowed if all of the following are true:

• There is not a “No U-turn” sign.
• You can clearly see traffic in both directions for at least 150 meters.
• You can complete the turn safely without affecting other vehicles, cyclists, or pedestrians.

Uncontrolled Intersections

Although rare in Calgary, some intersections have no traffic lights or stop signs. In these 4-way stop situations, the same safety rules apply. You must yield to other vehicles and pedestrians and make sure the U-turn can be completed safely.

Some real-world examples include the following:

• Residential four-way stop (e.g., a quiet Killarney neighborhood intersection): No traffic lights, no “No U-turn” sign posted, and clear sightlines in every direction. A U-turn here is likely legal, provided you can complete it safely, and no other driver or pedestrian needs to brake or change course.
• Major arterial with traffic lights (e.g., Macleod Trail at a signalized intersection): Unless a specific sign or signal permits a U-turn, making one here is illegal even during a protected left-turn phase.

Where U-turns Are Clearly Illegal in Calgary

Under Division 7 of Alberta’s Rules of the Road Regulation, a U-turn is illegal in the following places:

• Where a sign prohibits U-turns. If a “No U-turn” sign is posted, the prohibition stands regardless of intersection type-traffic lights, stop signs, or a simple median opening.
• Between intersections on a roadway. Mid-block U-turns are not allowed in urban areas. If you missed your turn on a busy Calgary street, do not attempt to flip around between blocks.

Many drivers only discover how restricted U-turns are after a Calgary police officer or RCMP member hands them a ticket. Here’s what an illegal U-turn typically costs:

• A $115 fine applies for illegal U-turns in Alberta
• 2 demerit points added to your Alberta driver’s licence
• Demerits remain on your record for 2 years from the date of offence
• Conviction may appear on your driver’s abstract and could increase insurance premiums

Accumulating too many demerit points over time can lead to license suspensions, mandatory driver improvement courses, and long-term insurance consequences. This is all from what many people dismiss as a “minor” traffic error.
